I hope everyone was able to have a restful and stress-free Thanksgiving Break with your families! We have a lot coming up in the next month!
Here is our week at a glance.......
Writing- We are starting a new informational writing about historical figures: Mary Musgrove, James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, or Sequoya . The students will pick ONE figure and write 3 chapters: Who were they?, What were their accomplishments, and Fun Facts.
Grammar- We are wrapping up possessive nouns and beginning root words (this will lead into prefixes and suffixes). We will look at the importance of finding meaning in the root word to help understand a word. Example: Untie, Helpful, Graceful
Reading- We are looking at the importance of asking and answering questions before, during, and after reading, including using illustrations to help find meaning in the text.
Math- We are covering several things this week in math: time, non-standard units of measurement, and standard units of measurement. I will be introducing inches, feet, centimeters and meters this week. We will continue measurement into next week as well. Don't be afraid to get that ruler out at home and measure things around the house!
Phonics- This week's pattern is the "r" controlled air/are/ear. Our spelling words are blare, hair, bear, flare, pair, wear, repair, cherry, barely. High frequency words are: important, left, need, together, took.
Content- We will be talking about bartering and trade as our economic standard and moving into force for science, including pushes, pulls, friction, and momentum.

Don't forget that we have Election Day tomorrow and there will be NO SCHOOL! This week is pretty light and lean.
Here is our week.....
Writing- finishing our third chapters in our informational books on pumpkins and starting our final drafts.
Reading- We are taking a look at what types of reasons do non-fictional authors use to support the topic or point they are trying to make.
Math- We are beginning two-step word problems this week. I'm hoping to get a video up soon explaining how I approach 2-step word problems. We are still using the CUBES method, but we now have two equations to set up and understanding WHAT the question is asking becomes crucial for these problems. Please continue to work on these skills in our homework this week.
Phonics- Our spelling pattern is "R" controlled vowels and this week its "o" that getting controlled. :) Our spelling words are: score, fort, horn, shore, short, thorn, before, forest, hornet
High Frequency words are: began, first, little, back, never
Content- We are finishing up James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove and how they impacted GA. For extra practice go to PebbleGo Biographies and they should be listed.

A huge thank you for those who volunteered and brought in pumpkins and supplies last week. The kids had a blast, we are going to check in later this week and see if we had any growth over the weekend/week (I'm thinking it may have been too cold).
Although the festivities are super fun in the evening please do not send your student in costume tomorrow UNLESS you are participating in the Jr. Beta Club fundraiser: Book Character Costume Day. If you do send them in costume, please provide a change of clothes (in case it gets too distracting, hot, itchy, etc).
Homework has CHANGED and requires a little more adult involvement. Part of the homework process now is to be timed while reading aloud. The directions for adults are at the top of the page. This is the only part you will need to help with daily. The rest they should (however not always) be able to do on their own.

Writing: Continuing our informational writing on pumpkins. This week will finish chapter one: introducing pumpkins and will begin chapter two: how to grow a pumpkin.
Reading: We are continuing to make connections within a text including connections between people, ideas, and steps in a procedure.
Math: We are continuing to use strategies within two-digit addition and subtraction. We are also starting word problems within 100 as well.
Phonics: Our pattern this week is "ar" words. Our spelling words are smart, scar, shark, start, star, spark, market, garlic, party. High frequency words are: away, left, near, play, until
Content: We are finishing up Sequoya and beginning James Oglethorpe.

This coming week is RED RIBBON WEEK and please know each day has a different theme. The more participants the better! Here is the schedule:
Monday – “Your future is key so stay drug free”
Participation: Wear as much red as possible
Tuesday – “Put a cap on drugs.”
Participation: Crazy hat or crazy hair day
Wednesday – “I have better things to do than drugs.”
Participation: Wear “what they do” such as a scout uniform, their team jersey, club shirt/mascot, musical note on shirt, etc.

Can you? This year is flying by. We are off to a good week and are jumping into quarter two curriculum where we are picking up the pace in math with double-digit addition and subtraction, two-step word problems, and diving into non-fiction, poetry, and more context clues for reading. Conferences are right around the corner and I'm looking forward to meeting you all one-on-one to discuss your child's successes within the classroom.
Next week will be all half-days, so please have arrangements for your child's dismissal at 12:20 each day. If they will be something other than their normal transportation please send a note. In addition, there will be no clubs next week.
Here is a glimpse of our week this week:
Writing: We (finally) finished our second personal narrative and are moving into scientific lab reports as our informational writing. We are kicking off the unit by learning about the different types of scientist there are and what their jobs entail. We then become scientists ourselves, conduct an experiment ( or a few) and write about our hypothesis, procedure, data, observations, and conclusion. We are starting off with a matter related experiment and will eventually move into experiments with forces (pushes and pulls) that go with our science standards.
Reading: We are learning about different elements of poetry: rhyme, alliteration, repetition, and rhythm.
Math: We are reviewing our strategies for solving within 20 and working on one-step word problems within 20 as well. We are working on two different types of word problems: 1) Missing addend and subtrahend (middle number). We call this "Part Unknown" in 2nd grade terms. 2) Total or Difference Unknown. Students see this as the standard way of solving word problems, just finding the "answer" as they say.
Here is an example of each:
1) Susie picked 10 apples. She ate some apples for snack. Now she has 7 apples left. How many did Susie eat?
2) John has 8 toy trucks. His mom gave him 11 more. How many toy trucks does John have now?
Phonics: We are focusing on vowel digraphs that make the long "e" sound: -ey, -ie, -ee, -ea
Are spelling words are dream, feel, yield, cream, wheel, field, greedy, increase, relief
High Frequency words include: always, play, school, sometimes, while
Content: We are wrapping up laws, rights, and the role of government leaders (mayor, governor, and president). We are moving into Creek and Cherokee Native American history at the end of the week. This standard is linked with our Georgia history standards as we get to dive into the native people groups of Georgia and build upon our understanding of GA regions and rivers.

Writing: We are writing personal narratives about our fall break, focusing on the key details.
Reading: We are reviewing the culmination of our standards for this quarter: Story Structure, illustrations providing meaning to our story, asking questions before, during, and after reading, and characters facing conflict and resolution.
Math: We are doing money this week, starting with reviewing coin value and moving into money word problems.
Grammar: We are doing collective nouns this week. (Example: pride of lions, herd of cattle, gaggle of geese)
Phonics: We are doing diphthongs that make a long "o" sound. For example: boat, woe, grow
Our words this week are: float, doe, grown, boat, shown, toe, below, yellow, toenail
High Frequency: began, big, off, once, saw, went, while
Content: We are finishing up matter and moving into government roles: President, Governor, and Mayor and roles within a community.

Writing- We are finishing the final touches editing and revising our personal narratives and publishing this Friday!
Reading- We are discussing how stories have a problem/challenge the character must face and how the character responses (what they do to solve the problem).
Math-We are looking at different strategies we can use to solve math facts within 20: number line, ten frames, making 10s
We are also introducing money coins this week: quarters, dimes, nickles, and pennies and learning their value.
Phonics- We are focusing on vowel digraphs that make the long "a" sound- ie (sleigh), ay (hay), ai (braid), ea (steak), ey (obey)
Our spelling words are: train, stay, eight, sprain, tray, freight, complain, obey, raisin
High Frequency: along, both, together, went, walk
Content- We are beginning matter this week and discussing teh physical properties: hardness, size, texture, color, odor, taste, and shape

This week is really going to be a catch-up/review week. There will also be NO PHONICS this week, as well as no spelling test on Friday. I hope you had a lovely long weekend with your kiddos! I wanted to make you aware that due to limited grades, several weeks of review, setting up classroom routine with small group, etc., 2nd grade collectively does not send out progress reports for quarter one. I will be in contact with you individually to let you know if there are any concerns at this time with your child. If you see "ones" on papers coming home, do not fear! I am continuously pulling small groups based on my student's performance and reteaching. I will let you know if there are areas that are concerning me across the board.

Tuesday was a catch-up day this week/review day.
Writing- We are expanding our writing by adding details to our beginning, stretching out our middles with interesting events, and wrapping up our endings with a detailed solution or lesson at the end.
Reading- We are finishing up how illustrations add meaning and detail to a text and will begin asking and answering questions about key details in a text.
Math- We are doing a combination of word problems and comparing numbers this week (greater than, less than, equal to).
Phonics- Our pattern this week is open syllables (where the vowel "rings out"). Our words are cry, go, she, fly, we, so, baby, robot. High frequency words are: done, don't, know, once, because, together.
Content- We are finishing up Georgia regions and moving into Georgia river by the end of the week.

Our week looks like this:
Writing: We will draft the middle and ending of our personal narratives. In our middle we will discuss the things that get in our way or stop the character from getting what he or she wants or from solving their problem. The ending will focus on solving the problem or getting what the character wanted.
Reading: We are still exploring story structure and will take our assessment mid-week. We will then move into clues the illustrations of a text offer the reader and how illustrations help answer questions about the text.
Math- We are still investigating place value and are beginning to explore expanded form. For example 243= 200+40+3, separating out the hundreds, tens, and ones. We are also going to begin word problems this week starting with addition "result unknown" and "part unknown" This means that either the answer is what the student is trying to solve or the first part of the problem and the result are given, but the 2nd addend is what the student is trying to solve. Content: We are finally getting to Georgia Regions this week, we are a little behind in content, but are making headway. Please see last week's blog for the specific regions and areas we will be identifying and learning about!
