It's hard to believe we are already in our 3rd week of school! I've thoroughly enjoyed reading your letters about your children and getting to know them over the past few weeks. Here is a glimpse into our week this week and what we will be doing for our Eclipse day next Monday!
Writing: We are continuing our writing launch unit and discussing what good writers do when they are finished, can't spell a word, need more to write about, and how they can evaluate themselves as a writer with a rubric.
Reading: We are continuing our launch unit and beginning to discuss how good readers share their thinking with others, ask questions (who, what, when, where, and why), and always think (make predictions, connections, figure out new words) as they read. Please encourage your children to do this with you as you read aloud with them at home.
Math- We are going over place value this week, identifying the value of the hundreds place, tens place, and ones place. We are beginning with base 10 and will gradually (over the upcoming weeks) introduce other strategies such as expanded form for place value.
Phonics- We are continuing to review digraph blends this week. Spelling words and our weekly Friday spelling test will begin NEXT WEEK. I will also begin our Word Work rotation next week for reading when we start working with our high frequency words and spelling words.
Grammar: We are expanding our noun knowledge with plural nouns. We are identifying why specific nouns need a capital letter.
Content: We are gearing up for Eclipse Day, by understanding moon phases this week and the moon's relationship with the earth and sun. We will discuss on Friday what we can expect to see on Monday!
Important Eclipse Info:
Next Monday we will be having a grade-wide rotation Eclipse Day! Each class with get to rotate teachers and experience different activities relating to the solar eclipse! This will be a fun and exciting day, but please know that 2nd grade Cobb County students WILL NOT be viewing the Eclipse outdoors. We will be live streaming through the Tellus Museum telescope broadcast. Some of you asked about Eclipse glasses. The school did order some, however the 3rd-5th grade students who will be viewing the Eclipse outdoors get 1st priority with the glasses and it is not guaranteed 2nd grade will be receiving any. As a reminder, students who are checked out early must be present until 11:15 to considered “in attendance” for the school day. Please contact me with any additional questions if I left any unanswered.
Clubs: After-school clubs are back in full swing and man do they look fun! As fun as they are, it is extremely helpful that I know who is club in the afternoon and also if it changes your child's afternoon transportation. If they do not have a note indicating a transportation change, I will have to send them home their normal way. Sometimes the clubs do not give us a roster and I have no idea who is participating in robotics on Monday, piano on Tuesday, WaytoPlay...and all the other 50 clubs :). I appreciate the heads up!
Forms: I am still missing forms from a handful of students. Please get those in ASAP. If you need a copy of anything, please let me know and I will be happy to send it in!
*****OPEN HOUSE at the 2-5 campus has been changed from Monday, August 21st to Thursday, August 24th. *****
Thanks for all you do! I couldn't do my job without wonderful parents like you!
