Greetings Parents and family!
I am so excited to be back at school and am privileged to be teaching your wonderful students this year. Each week I will post a glimpse of what we are doing in each subject and will also be posting parent resources in the "parent resource" page tabbed above over the course of the school year. I will also provide important upcoming events and other important school-wide information, so please make sure to check the blog weekly for updates.
Here is a glimpse of this week.....
Writing- We will be doing some fun back to school writing as well as some pre-assessment writing to kick start our school year. This will give me the opportunity to see where each student is in their writing process and will give me a great starting point to compare to as they improve throughout the course of the school year.
Reading- We are going over classroom procedures for our reading lessons, work time (Daily 5: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing) and share time (a time to wrap-up and share what we learned during reading)
Math- We are going over classroom procedures for our math lessons, work time (Daily 3: Math by Myself, Math with Someone, Math Writing), and share time (what we learned during our lesson and work time). We are also learning about collecting data and displaying it in pictographs, bar graphs, and line plots.
Phonics- We are reviewing long and short vowel sounds. We will not start weekly spelling words until week 4.
Grammar- We are reviewing the components of a sentence (capital letter, punctuation, does it make sense- who and a what)
Content- We are reviewing seasonal changes and will have our first tree observation to observe the characteristics of a tree in summer (we will continue to observe it throughout the school year and record our observations). We will also conduct our first STEM activity: Saving Fred! Be sure to ask your kids what they did for that one. :)
Homework this week is an "All About Me" bag. The directions will come home on Monday in their homework folder. This folder is to come home and be returned to school DAILY. If you have any questions, transportation changes, etc., please put those in the "Notes" section of their homework folder.
August 21st is OPEN HOUSE so mark your calendars!
A great resource for upcoming events is the King Springs PTA website: http://www.myvlink.org/ksepta/
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns and I'll be happy to get back to you!
